The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins is one of the many books where we over look some of the smaller not so obvious meanings or elements. One of the big connections so many people over look is how many districts were established. There were 13 original districts; this relates to our history form when we started out with the 13 colonies. This slowly relates to how back in the 13 colonies we used to be ruled by a king and how Panem is ruled by President Snow. Everyone knows from the main summary of how Katniss takes Prim’s place in the games. What many people don’t know is that the meaning of Primrose is, “I can’t live without you”. This is strong underlying message the author is trying to send to the audience. It shows how deep the bond between these two sisters really goes. Another thing we tend to forget is how the government keeps control over these people and that is by power. One way the government flaunts its power is through the avox. They showed how they had the power to strip her away from everything she had, even her power of speech. That is how this government took control by brutal force. The one thing that the government didn’t expect was a girl like Katniss who enters the games. Katniss shows us how even in such a harsh, intense environment she still remains loyal to herself. She didn’t turn into some killing machine bent on winning. She didn’t kill someone and let it go. She keeps going back to them in her mind, wondering if they had girlfriend at home or how upset their family is. This is one of the big themes to this story and that is don’t ever let anyone change who you are on the inside.
